What are Ohio's Nursing CE Requirements?

Registered Nurse

If you are a RN in Ohio, you do not have to renew your license until 2019. You are required to complete 24 CE hours every two years. One CE hour must be related to the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and the rules of the Ohio Board of Nursing (Category A).

Advanced Practitioner Nurse

If you are a APRN, you do not have to renew your license until 2019.

Q: In 2019, what are the CE requirements to renew as an APRN?
A: For the first period of renewal immediately following the initial issuance of the advanced practice registered nurse license, a licensee is not required to complete any contact hours of CE (Rule 4723-8- 10(B)(3), OAC). CRNAs, CNPs, CNMs, and CNSs must meet the requirements to maintain their national certification, with the exception of CNSs who were originally issued a COA on or before December 31, 2000 and are not nationally certified,

Q: What are the CE requirements to renew as an APRN in 2021?
A: CE contact hours must be obtained between November 1, 2019 and October 31, 2021 in order to renew your APRN license by October 31, 2021. Starting November 1, 2019, APRNs must complete 24 hours of CE for each APRN license. For an APRN-CNP, APRN-CNS, or APRN-CNM, at least 12 of those hours must include 12 hours of CE in advanced pharmacology (Section 4723.24 (C), ORC). The 24 hours of CE required to renew each APRN license are in addition to the 24 hours of CE required to renew the RN license.

Licensed Practical Nurse

If you are an LPN, it's time to renew your license. The LPN renewal period opens on July 1, 2018 and extends through October 31, 2018. It is estimated that over 55,000 LPN licenses will renew from July 1, 2018 through October 31, 2018 so the Board of Nursing is encouraging LPNs to complete their CE requirements and to renew their license before September 15, 2018. Starting September 16, all LPNs will have have to pay a late processing renewal fee of $65 plus an additional $50 fee for late filers. All of these fees will add up to a total late renewal fee of $115 so make sure that you complete your CE requirements so you can renew early and avoid any trouble.
